Or: stuff I don't like.

Sad to say, I'm accustomed to forums behaving differently. Maybe I don't visit enough different forums, maybe Stardock is just being quirky. My main experience comes from the GalCiv2 forums and more recently the GalCiv3 forums so I'll use the latter one as an example.

- Recent posts: I'm on the GalCiv3 forum, why am I seeing posts from other forums? I replied in a StarControl topic, thinking it was a GalCiv3 topic. If I want to see StarControl topics, I'll go to the StarControl forums.

- Journals; they're in the news, they have their own section of the site and they're on the forums. The hell? Are you affraid we might not see them? Why not make the Journals subforum a subforum of every other GalCiv3 subforum too? And add a few popups showing the journals too, while you're at it. (Okay, this might not be entirely forum related) (sarcasm btw, not mad)

- Founders subforum; shouldn't this be for founders only? So why are the posts I make there, also showing up in the General subforum? That way we can't display any of the NDA goodies in the repository/vault because non-founders will see them.

- Slow: I live in the Netherlands (AMS-IX fyi) and have a 60/6Mbit cable hookup. Yet the GalCiv2 and 3 forums load slower than most other sites I visit.

- Colour-scheme: Do you know what white text on a black background does? It burns into your eyes! If I read a piece of text and then stop reading, I have a blob of brightly coloured light in my vision with dark lines through it. Please give me an 'inverted colour scheme' option.

Oh, on a general note; how do I make a thumbnail on your forums? putting an url around an image doesn't seem to work.

For the color issue go to forums.stardock.com. You can access the other forums and it's a plain black on white text.

If you can't seem to get thumbnailing to work, click the HTML button and enter

<a href="http://your.image.url">

before the img tag for your thumbnail and </a> afterwards.

The recent post thing "plagues" all of the SD forums...the devs have been inquired about it before and they have said that it is basically because "JoeUser and Wincustomize are important to all of us"...I don't want to put words in their mouth but that's what I got out of their response -- I'm sure one of them will correct/elaborate on my take....

I have found, no matter where I access from, that the SD forums are particularly slow relative to most webpages...Sins forums seem to be the worst of the ones I have accessed, GC3 actually has been a little better for me....

As for the color scheme, you can't please everyone...some people prefer black text on white background, some prefer white text on black background....personally, I prefer white on black which is why I always view from the sins forums...

It's possible to alter the look of a site with an extension like Styles Tuner, if the white on black is killing you.  It would kind of help to know a bit about CSS though.  Otherwise you'll be 'blarg, why is that black on black?'

The Stardock community of users/customers crosses several diverse 'interests' and each has its site and associated Forum.  Stardock has found that most users share interests across more than just the one site [and its Forum] and chose to link the forums in many categories so nothing is missed.

By and large this works well for everyone, with only the occasional 'quirky' connected thread...

All 'illuminated' screens [including televisions] SHOULD be viewed in a lighted room [backlighting].  There will be no difference whether text is black on white or white on black...

It's basically an Eyeball Mk I problem.  When you stop looking at something bright, even in good lighting conditions, and then go somewhere dark, you will see an afterimage.  Your night vision kicks in but your 'normal' vision takes some time to cool down.  That's why, for example, glare is a problem when driving at night.

Nah...I'm pretty sure it's the alcohol....

Why would you drive at night with alcohol in your eyes?  just drink it... more fun...
